Challenge to civilian judge in trial of soldiers

El Tiempo reports that three Honduran officers who are on trial in civilian court have challenged the judge because he is a member of the Association of Judges for Democracy (AJD),
an organization that issued a paid advertisement in the media in which, according to the defense, attacked the Armed Forces of Honduras. "After the coup most of the violations of human rights remain unpunished and the power structures (the Supreme Court and the Army) that facilitated the coup have not been punished," the AJD complained, on the occasion of a visit to Honduras by Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR). "We have filed a formal objection against Judge [Mario] Diaz, since the publication denounced the military as violators of human rights."
